Don’t get me wrong I hated school and enjoyed the summer like any other kid out there. I am also semi-retarded, partially because I didn’t try hard and I wasn’t pushed in high school by either my parents or the teachers. It was only until I had a life changing event that I realized that schooling is way more important than I originally thought.
Nine years ago I was stabbed a bunch of times. As fantastic as it seems in the movie I assure you it can alter your mood quite quickly about the way you are living. I soon realized that my life was in an uneducated downward spiral and if I was ever going to make any sort of decent wage I would have to go to college.
In a debate with another educated human about children’s education, it was determined that he hates the idea of year round schooling and I don’t. As he has the right to his own opinion I listened. I do agree with him that parents are probably the main reason that kids are dumb, but it’s not always the parent.
Just like you and I get caught up in going through the motions especially the ones that really don’t want to be there, so do teachers. Usually the one’s that only teach so they can have summers off. This isn’t true for all of them but when I went to college most of the education majors that I talked to didn’t want to teach to actually teach. They wanted a pension and nearly 90 days off in a row. Apparently they were all still farmers and need our children in the summer to tend to their farm.
We are for the most part a bunch of people that go to the grocery store to buy our broccoli and Captain Crunch. We don’t pick weeds out of our strawberry patches. Yes, when school was made readily available for the masses we were all pretty much farmers. How many farmers do you really know now? How many parents do you know that pen their kids in a daycare during the summer? TONS. Myself included. I’d rather pen my kid in school to interact with her friends everyday and learn. It would better than be locked in some daycare forgetting all the information she was just taught while I pay $1,000+ a month. Sorry daycare providers you can blow it out of your ass because you are too god damn expensive.
Hypothetically, today I teach you how to pimp hoes and reconcile your bank account. Then I don’t make you apply this information for nearly 90 days. What do you remember? Slap your bank teller. That’s right, lots of important information is forgotten and now it must be relearned. Let us be honest as well, how many of you are really out there reinforcing what was learned though out the school year over the summer vacation? 10%? 30%? Point is not a whole lot.
If you aren’t pounding your child’s head with knowledge for 3 months why not let a teacher who has nothing better to do during the summer and who is also getting paid, do it. I’ve heard the arguments about, “Well I stay everyday until 5 to help kids and to meet with parents.†THATâ€S GREAT!!! I wish more people were like you. But when I’m forced I have to stay overtime too. Also, only on salary.
Jobs change. Life changes. You either evolve or get left behind. When America is overrun by new immigrants with superior education and our children are all employed by them you can thank your resistance to change. Kids will be kids. Kids will find the time to be kids and play. If you have a problem with the changes that will eventually take effect you can move to one of those countries where they would kill you and your entire family to have a free education even if it is year round. The more you know before you hit the age of 12 the easier it is going to be to grasp concepts as a teenager. Get on board or not. It’s only our children.
