Few Series – Paul Virzi

Here’s how it goes. I send an interview e-mail, they reply, I reply, they reply, pencil’s down.

PAUL WAS FIRST ATTRACTED TO STAND-UP COMEDY AT A VERY YOUNG AGE. HE WAS ONLY NINE YEAR OLD WHEN HE WITNESSED EDDIE MURPHEY’S “RAW”. BY THE END OF THE SHOW, HE WAS SLEEPING ON HIS FATHER’S LAP BUT THE SEED WAS PLANTED.IN THE YEAR 2000 PAUL ENTERED A CONTEST IN UPSTATE NY WHERE HE WENT TO HIGH SCHOOL. IT WAS CALLED THE HUDSON VALLEY’S FUNNIEST MAN FOR A POPULAR RADIO STATION. THE COMPETITION, WHICH WAS COMPRISED OF OVER 20 CONTESTANTS, JOINING THE LAST SEVEN COMICS IN THE FINALS IT CAME DOWN TO HIM AND ONE OTHER. IN THE END, PAUL FELL SHORT. HOWEVER, THIS INSPIRED HIM.

SINCE THEN HE HAS OPENED NUMEROUS TIMES FOR SOME OF THE BEST COMEDIANS IN THE BUSINESS. COMICS SUCH AS DAVE ATTELL FROM COMEDY CENTRALS “INSOMNIAC” AND BILL BURR FROM COMEDY CENTRALS “CHAPPELLE’S SHOW” AND HIS ONE HOUR SPECIAL “LET IT GO” ARE JUST A COUPLE. PAUL HAS ALSO SHARED THE STAGE WITH THE LIKES OF TRACEY MORGAN, BOB SAGET, CHRISTOPHER TITUS AND LOUIS CK.

HE ALSO OPENED FOR BILL BURR AT CARNEGIE HALL WHERE HE KILLED IN FRONT OF A SOLD OUT CROWD ON THE MOST LEGENDARY STAGE IN THE WORLD.

PAUL PRODUCES A WEEKLY PODCAST “THE VIRZI EFFECT” IN WHICH HE GIVES ADVICE, AND TALKS; SPORTS, MOVIES, AND SMACK.

Without further ado:

RONALD RENWICK – Paul, people don’t know you very well, yet but you performed at Carnegie Hall (New York). Does that concern you?

PAUL VIRZI – Many people know who I am because of Carnegie Hall.  It was the most incredible night of my life.  If you’re in comedy to get famous then that can hold people back.  There are no short cuts.  You gotta pay your dues and work very hard.  When that happens people will know you.

RENWICK – When someone asks you for a light how do you respond?

VIRZI – I don’t smoke

RENWICK – Did you have a sandbox growing up?

VIRZI – I did not have a sandbox growing up because my parents loved me.

RENWICK – How many times can you pogo?

VIRZI – I was a bad ass pogo sticker in my day.  Probably 100.

RENWICK – Sometimes when you talk on your podcast you seem kind of hood…

VIRZI – My friends tell me I get more Italian when I get mad.  As far as being hood, I just talk from the heart and if it gets gangster, than so be it.

RENWICK – I hang negative quotes and comments people say about me on my wall to keep me motivated, what’s on your motivational wall?

VIRZI – Even though you have family and friends that support you, you always have doubters and haters.  It is who they are.  They have too. They are built to suck and be losers.  So doing well always hurts them.  I like that.  However, my main motivation is getting better. Relentlessly trying to be great and master something.

RENWICK – You once ranted about how bad the ex-Pittsburgh Funnybone was; which couldn’t have been truer. Now that you get to tour the country what club has the best bean bag chair?

VIRZI – My favorite Comedy Clubs are any without plastic fucking chairs.

RENWICK – Do you ever miss using a comb?

VIRZI – My hair is coming back now so I am getting pleasure using combs and brushes.  Rogaine, dude.  Shit works.

RENWICK – Monster Trucks or Dirt Bikes?

VIRZI – Dirt Bikes because it’s more likely someone will get fucked up really badly.

RENWICK – The Mexican drug cartel needs you as a drug mule and has your family hostage. Do you go all Schwarzenegger on their ass or on yours with the heroin packets?

VIRZI – I would get a bottle of Scotch, a bunch of coke and a big gun and pull a Rambo on those dudes!  I would even put that stupid black face paint on.

Not really.

RENWICK – You interact with your fans a lot; will you ever be above it?

VIRZI – The fans are why comedy clubs are opened.  The fans laugh.  I will always be cool to my supports and the people who believe in what I do.

The only thing I’m above is answering these stupid fucking questions.

THIS INTERVIEW IS OVER…!

There you have it folks. This is the worst interview Paul has ever partaken in but he’s still willing to kick back and answer some tweets. He’s a class act that will not disappoint.
